A wood burning sauna is the older way to do this and, for a lot of people, the reason they wanted a sauna at all. The heat is softer than electric, the room smells of woodsmoke, and there is a fire to look after rather than a thermostat to set.

The practical case is just as strong. A wood stove needs no electrical supply at all, which matters if the sauna is going somewhere with no power run to it: the far end of a property, a cabin, a lot where trenching a circuit would cost more than the stove. There is no controller to buy and no panel upgrade to worry about.

What it does need is a chimney, proper clearances to combustibles, and someone willing to light it forty minutes before they want to use it. Your insurer will most likely want a WETT inspection once it is installed. That is an inspection you book locally, carried out by a certified professional.
